Description
At the start of the twentieth century, American arts and culture were reshaped by new artistic ideals and rapid advances in technology and manufacturing. Stained glass became a particularly important site for negotiating these changes, as artists and patrons both navigated the transition from traditional handicraft to more industrial methods of production.
These tensions converged at St. Peter’s Chapel, designed in the Arts and Crafts style in 1901, with stained-glass windows commissioned from multiple makers between 1905 and 1930, with the majority from Tiffany Studios. The chapel’s architecture and windows reflect a range of approaches, from a commitment to handcraftsmanship and historical styles to an embrace of new materials and production techniques. In this lecture, Dr. Kayli Rideout will explore how these varied responses illuminate a significant period of American art and cultural history.
