Details:
Mare Island Art Studios is proud to present Wendy the Welder & The Mare Island Shipyard Workers, a powerful new exhibition by artist JeanCherie and guest artists honoring the women who helped shape Mare Island history during World War II.
At the heart of the exhibit is Wendy the Welder, a sculpture inspired by the more than 11,000 women who built ships on Mare Island during the war effort. The piece celebrates the strength, resilience, and lasting impact of these women whose contributions helped shape both local and national history.
JeanCherie, a Vallejo artist and member of Mare Island Art Studios, created the sculpture as a tribute to the workers of her mother’s generation and the spirit of the Mare Island community. Her vision is to help bring greater recognition to this important history through the creation of a future large-scale public sculpture for the Mare Island Core.
