This event is SOLD OUT! Your enthusiasm for bugs is truly inspiring, and we are officially at capacity. Please stay tuned: we'll be announcing more bug-based events soon!
_____________
This summer, join LCWM, Querkus Creative, John Ball Zoo, GRAM and Bug club as we shine a spotlight on some of our favorite nighttime pollinators: moths!
The stars of each night's show will vary depending on the time of season, geographic location, and habitat type. For this event, we'll be partnering with the John Ball Zoo, Querkus Creative, GRAM and Bug club to bring their local moths centerstage.
Using a practice called lightsheeting (or moth sheeting), which is a method used by entomologists and nature enthusiasts alike, we will observe and identify moths at night. This method involves hanging a white sheet and illuminating it with a bright light, which attracts moths and other night-flying bugs. This non-invasive technique is a great way to learn as a citizen scientist, and adds to our scientific knowledge of our local biodiversity. We would recommend downloading iNaturalist prior to the event.
This event will happen outside and after dark - please come dressed for the weather and activity. We recommend bringing a headlamp or flashlight, and to wear long pants and socks to protect yourself from ticks. In case of severe or dangerous weather, the event may be postponed or cancelled - if this is the case, registrants will be notified of any changes via email and social media.
There is a grass parking lot at this preserve. Parking is free, and we will gather in the lot at 8:30pm (just before sunset) before hiking into the preserve together.
Refreshments will be provided. We hope you join us as we gather to witness first-hand some of nature's superstar insect talents during this summer tour.
