Details:
Join us for a reading with local author Bethany Adams followed by an open mic where anyone is invited to share up to 5 min of their own writing.
Unsupported follows Bethany Adams (contributor to Blood Sweat Tears) and her hiking partner, Katie Rhodes on their record-setting thru-hike of the Adirondack 46 High Peaks. Adams and Rhodes face the challenges of the trail head-on, and with each other's constant companionship, buoyed by their fierce desire to prove just what women can do in the mountains. Through her time on trail, Adams is forced to reckon with the dissolution of her marriage, and what it means to be supported in life, love, and adventure.
Bethany Adams Bio:
Bethany Adams (She/her)
Lake Placid, New York--ancestral Mohawk land and traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee People.
Bethany Adams is a writer, mountain athlete, and experiential educator. After undergraduate studies at Paul Smith's College, she entered the field of Wilderness Therapy and worked as an instructor for five years. She holds a Master's degree in community development and has been published in Trail Runner and Outside Magazines, along with Blood Sweat Tears, a collection of stories about the women+ experience on trail.
Bethany is proud to be a Community Ambassador for SheJumps, a non-profit organization that helps more women and girls have access to the outdoors. She is the first woman to achieve 100 fastest known times (FKTs), and in 2020, she and Katie Rhodes became the first women to climb all forty-six Adirondack High Peaks unsupported. She is thrilled to share stories of the healing she has found in nature and the strength of the female athlete.
